London, UK – Conor McGregor will be returning to the ring at UFC 246, this time facing off with Cowboy Cerrone in a matchup that could get him back on track in title fighting standing. The match comes after McGregor’s fourth-round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in UFC 229.
Irish Mix martial arts fighter Conor McGregor will be hoping for redemption as he comes up against Cowboy Cerrone at UFC 246. The former UFC world champion has had a torrid time over the last few months. First, he is coming from a fourth-round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in UFC 229. McGregor is also serving a six-month suspension from the game after he was involved in an altercation shortly after the loss to Khabib.
McGregor remains one of the most recognizable UFC fighters around the world. The Irishman has built some sort of celebrity status and even though he is enjoying the money and fame right now, it is clear he didn’t take the Khabib loss well. The 30-year-old, who is currently 21-4, is hoping for another shot at Nurmagomedov but even as he plots his revenge, he will need to move past Cowboy Cerrone. Cerrone will not be a pushover though. Just like McGregor, he also has a lot riding on this fight.
The 36-year-old is currently 36-13 and if he beats McGregor, he could also be back on track to become a title fight contender soon. Cerrone is a veteran fighter and brings a lot of experience to the ring. He holds the record for most wins in UFC history. Like McGregor, Cerrone has a lot to prove too. He will be entering the ring at UFC 246 on the backdrop of a knockout loss to Justin Gaethje in September last year.
Cerrone may not be one of the blockbuster fighters in UFC but knows very well that the world will be watching his match with McGregor. It is his chance to prove to everybody else that he belongs to the top tier of UFC fighters in the world. But even then, a loss will be devastating for him. Royal Kings Sportsbook has, in fact, posted an opening line of McGregor at -270 and Cerrone’s at +215. The bookies seem to believe that it will take a lot of effort for him to beat McGregor and a loss will be a huge blow to his career.
McGregor, on the other hand, will hope to put the past few months behind him. A win against Cerrone will be a huge step and even though it’s not going to be an easy fight, he can pull it off. However, whether Khabib Nurmagomedov is open to a rematch is another story. McGregor may still need to fight through the pack to reach Nurmagomedov, but with all the money at stake, the Russian might just be tempted to jump into the ring.
